Picture: Humble Servant
Philippians 2:1-11
The day we have been waiting for has finally arrived. We have received a perfect picture of the power, glory, might, and love of Jesus. However, these pictures have not stained the walls of scripture just for our appreciation. They are a rally cry for how we should live until the second advent of Jesus Christ. The birth of Christ is described in several passages, but one section of scripture is hardly considered when thinking of Christmas. Yet these scriptures give us a picture of the moments leading up to the incarnation.
who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross. Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
Philippians 2:6-11 (NKJV)
In this picture, we see the omnipotent Lord becoming a humble servant. Choosing to breathe our air and walk our ground. Choosing to give himself as a ransom for many. It is no wonder why the apostle Paul uses this description of the coming of Jesus as a man to reinforce the command that preceded it.
Therefore if there is any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any affection and mercy, fulfill my joy by being like-minded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind. Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself. Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others.
Philippians 2:1-5 (NKJV)
Many people spend all of December trying to experience the elusive spirit of Christmas. However, the spirit of Christmas is the outcome of the work of the Spirit of Jesus. As we celebrate His birth, may we all walk in His footsteps and become people of grace and truth.
